  1. A non-communicable disease (NCD) is a medical condition or disease that is not caused by infection. NCDs can refer to diseases which last for long periods of time and escalate slowly. NCDs are the leading cause of death globally.
  2. Tobacco use, physical inactivity, the harmful use of alcohol and unhealthy diets all increase the risk of dying from a NCD. Circumstances like this increase a higher chance of dying especially if you already have a NCD. This can give breathing problems.
  3. There are roughly 152,000 strokes in the UK every year that is more than one every five minutes.Every year, 15 million people around the world suffer a stroke. Around six million die and another five million are left permanently disabled. Stroke is the second leading cause of disability.Disability may include loss of vision and / or speech or getting paralysed.
  4. Cardiovascular disease  is a group of diseases that involve the heart or blood vessels.Cardiovascular disease includes coronary artery disease such as angina and heart attacks.
  5.  It does this by lowering your blood pressure preventing blood clots, which can lead to heart attack or stroke.

  7. By the heart valve being faulty, blood is not able to pump blood around the body quick enough which can cause heart failure.
  8.  Balloon valvuloplasty cures many symptoms of a faulty heart disease.
  9. Two risks of non communicable dieases are unhealthy diets and physical inactivity.
  10. A person with a high risk factor is not likely to get the disease but it depends on how theyre body reacts.

Compare how Ron Suskind presents the difficulties of Cedric’s education in part 1 and part 2

In this essay we will be explaining how Ron Suskind presents various difficulties of Cedric’s education in part one and part two of his articles. Cedric goes through many difficulties when in Ballou High and MIT such as receiving abuse from other students, struggling with the work at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and violence. Throughout the articles, Suskind uses various language devices that suggest that it was difficult for Cedric to get an education. The different ways are based on how Cedric gets bullied in Ballou High for being smart whereas in MIT he is inferior to other students due to his social status.

One language device that is used in article one by Ron Suskind is a metaphor. We can see this when the writer says ‘The arduous odyssey of Cedric.’ This suggests that Cedric’s road to success will be a long, hard journey. We can infer this as the word ‘arduous’ means difficult, tiring or tough. Furthermore the word ‘odyssey’ is taken from a Greek myth where a man goes on a hard journey. Similarly, Cedric faces his difficulties alone as he has to do work for himself as there is no one to help him.

Another language device that is used in part 2 of the article to suggest Cedric’s education difficult is a metaphor. We see can see this when he says, ‘I tell him those people on the sideline are already out of the race’. The word ‘race’ suggests that Cedric’s education is competitive, therefore for him to catch up intellectually to people at MIT he has to work hard. Here, Suskind uses the metaphor of a race because the key to a race is endurance which suggests Cedric needs to keep up his hard work in order to match the other students at MIT. Unlike the first quote which implies that Cedric faces his education alone, the second quote describes Cedric’s education as a race where he competes against other people at MIT. In this sense, these two quotes are different because one shows Cedric as an individual whereas the other quote shows Cedric competing as part of a group.

Another quote that is used in the article 1 to suggest Cedric’s education is difficult  is “Failure is persuasive here, even seductive”. The language device that is being shown here is personification. Here, Ron Suskind implies that in Ballou High failure is all around you, therefore it is easier to be lured into not doing well then actually succeeding. The word ‘seductive’ suggest that failure in the school is something the students are attracted and tempted to rather then being successful. The word ‘persuasive’ suggests that the students truly do not want to fail but due to their surroundings such as poor backgrounds and areas in which they come from, makes them believe they have to fail by default as it is always the easier option.

Another quote in part 2 that is used to suggest Cedric’s education is difficult is ‘But where I start from Is so far behind where some other kids are , I have to run twice the distance to catch up’. The language device that is used in this quote is a metaphor. This quote shows us how Cedric has to catch up with other students who come from affluent families and backgrounds. It also suggests that Cedric has to work twice as hard to catch up to the level of the other student even though at Ballou High he was at an advantage. This is also difficult as being a minority means that he is not supported at MIT and rather brought down for not being as smart as others. This current quote compares to that last as this quote suggests Cedric makes an effort to catch up with other students and increase the importance of their learning, whereas the other suggests that students at Ballou High are attracted to failing.

Another quote in part 2 that suggest Cedric’s education is difficult is ‘Being a minority and a high achiever means you have to carry extra baggage about who you are, and where you belong. That puts them at risk.’ The language device that the author uses here is metaphor. Here Ron Suskind implies that in order to be respected whilst being a minority due to your background at the MIT , you need to be better or on the same levels at those students with the a critical advantage in their education. It also suggest that  being a minority because you are a black person trying to enter a white mans university such as MIT proves to be very difficult. The term ‘extra baggage’ suggest that Cedrics has a lower social status as his background consists of poverty and as if on a plane in order to travel you have to pay an excess cost to have extra baggage. This refers to Cedric education at MIT as he has to pay and extra price on his journey to becoming successful. The ‘running twice the distance to catch up’ quote compares to this one as the first one talks about how Cedric has aspirations to be successful and makes effort, whereas this quote talks about how he has to pay an extra price to be successful making the whole journey a harder process.

An additional quote in the article that suggests Cedric’s education is difficult is “Mr Washington vents his frustration at how the deck is stacked against underprivileged students like Cedric.” This quote suggest that the odds are hugely stacked against Cedric as he comes from a background full of poverty, lack of privileges and being black in a so called white mans school. The word underprivileged suggest that Cedric being black is a disadvantage and trying to be successful is a struggle. The word ‘deck’ suggest that just like a game of cards the odds are stacked against him making everything harder. Just like the previous quote Cedric faces an automatic disadvantage with the odds stacked against him, similarly to the last where Cedric automatically struggles to be successful as he starts from behind.

In conclusion, there are many ways in which Ron Suskind presents Cedric’s education as difficult in at Ballou High and MIT. The quote that has the most effect for this point ‘the arduous Odyssey of Cedric’ the reason why I think is because it talks about how Cedric has a hard journey in education in order to successful. He faces struggles such as bullying , discrimination and lack of support he also constantly faces people bringing him down and stopping him from excelling. These points are all ways Ron Suskind portrays Cedric’s education to be difficult.

Mos Def Paragraph

How do the emeeces we have studied criticised the REEL ?

One emcee we have studied who criticises the REEL is mos def. Mos def is a Brooklyn born rapoe who has socially conscious lyrics in his song , ‘mathematics’. One bar that expresses this is when he says ” Two columns for who is and who ain’t niggas “. How I infer that the REEL is being criticised is because he is describing that if you do not act the way black people are portrayed in the song you will not be classified as proper back person even though you are black and are not involved in selling drugs , being a savage and being aggressive. This is how the emcee I have studied criticises the reel.

Hip Hop

According to Flores hip hop has changed since its beginnings as in the beginning black people made hip hop their own and something special as they would specifically talk about subjects such as ills of police brutality and racism. But overtime these artists went into independent record labels , which furthermore were bought by the big labels. Once these artists were owned by the big labels they changed the lyrics of hip hop to suit the white audiences preference. This was because they knew hip hop was largely profitable and took advantage of it.

‘ the treaty of Versailles was unfair to Germany ? ‘ Do you disagree or agree

The Treaty of Versailles was created to ensure the downfall of Germany so that they could not start another war. One side of the argument is that the Treaty was extremely unfair to Germany, as it took away some of her most valuable assets to the country and boosted the oppositions of Germany . However, the other side of the argument is that as Germany caused a lot of damage, They deserved to be punished and prevented from making more trouble. The Treaty of Versailles was the peace settlement signed after WW1 had ended in 1918 . The treaty was signed at the Versailles Palace in France by Germany. The three most important politicians in this case were David Lloyd George , Georges Clemenceau and Woodrow Wilson.

I strongly agree with the statement ‘ the treaty of Versailles was unfair to Germany’ because Germany lost a lot of their army , which made the countries life very hard including the citizens in it . The evidence for this is that by restricting the German army of only 100,000 volunteers, the Treaty left them defenceless and vulnerable. For such a large country, an army of 100,000 men was going work to keep order within Germany, but was not large enough to defend Germany from other invading powers. From this I can infer that Germany was a country who largely relied on their military to be a symbol of there pride and nationalism as it was so great, but the treaty took this way and also put the land of Germany at risk. This is the first reason why I agree with the statement ‘ the treaty of Versailles was unfair to Germany.’

I wholeheartedly agree with the statement ‘the treaty of Versailles was unfair to Germany’ the reason for this is that a lot of money was taken out of the German economy due to the fact that they had to pay the Allies. The evidence for this is that Germany had to make payments, these payments called reparations, would be paid monthly and would total some £6,600 million. This meant that Germany would suffer at a huge amount because as well was their army being stripped they now have to face paying the other countries large amount of money, which would also had an effect on its colonies. This I agree with the statement ‘the treaty of Versailles was unfair to Germany.’

Some people may disagree with the statement ‘ the treaty of Versailles was unfair to Germany’ because it was said by many that that as Germany caused a lot of damage, they deserved to be punished and prevented from stirring up more trouble. The evidence for this is that even though Germany had to pay the reparation ,many people believed that the reparations were fair as the amount was changed to a more reasonable figure in 1929. From this I can infer that Germany having to pay this was fair as it punished Germany as well as giving the smaller countries of Europe a chance to boost themselves. This is why some people may disagree with the statement  ‘ the treaty of Versailles was unfair to Germany.’

Another reason why some people may disagree with the statement ‘the treaty of Versailles was unfair to Germany’ is because Germany’s colonies were taken away due to the fact that it would fuel them to become a country that was rich again. The evidence for this is that Germany’s overseas empires were taken away as it was a cause of bad relations between Britain and Germany before the war, and that taking it away, would solve many problems. From this I can infer that this was to make sure that Germany did not have the funds to start another war or rebel against the treaty, to insure the safety of other countries. This is why some people may disagree with the statement ‘the treaty of Versailles is unfair to Germany.’

In conclusion, I think the treaty of Versailles was unfair to Germany due to the fact that they were stripped of all their wealth and pride , for a war that was not entirely their fault. It is understandable that they caused a lot of damage during the war but I feel that treaty or the entire subject should of been dealt with in an entirely different way, making Germany’s chance to boost their economy slightly more realistic.

Is the merchant of Venice Anti-Semitic ?

In this essay I will explore the question ‘is the merchant of Venice anti-Semitic ?’. Anti-semitisim is the hostility and discrimination towards Jews. There were many forms of discrimination towards Jews , a prime example of this was when they were segregated into the ghetto, away from all the other Christians as Jews were seen as a threat to them, the origin of the word ‘Ghetto’ comes from 2 different places , the first from the Italian word ‘geto’ which means to cast off. Also the other italian word ‘barghetto’ which means small community. In 1611 a man called  Thomas Corbat combined the two words and created the word ghetto. As the Jews were parted into this area they were also restricted from working in certain jobs , but on the contrary they had  jobs to do with the Jewish or Venetian stock exchange also know as The Rialto which was made as stereotype thorough out this period . Jews were often stigmatised and lives made hard as they were treated inhumanly like , they were used as a way of getting money. Throughout my essay I will asses the character who made these points take effect.

One way in which discrimination is shown in the merchant of Venice is in Shylock’s ” I am a Jew. Hath not a Jew eyes? hath not a Jew hands, organs, dimensions, senses, affections, passions?” speech where he urges us the audience to understand that Jews and Christians share a common humanity.Shylock also exposes the hypocrisy of the Christian characters who are always talking about Christian love and mercy,  but then go out of their way to put down and divide , Shylock because he’s Jewish and different. From this I can infer that Shylock is saying that although he is a Jew , he is still a human just like a Christian. But a counterpoint to this speech that is often said by many, is that what is the reason for Shakespeare adding this speech to the play if he wanted Shylock to be seen as a villain and not a hero , this is because in this speech Shylock is expressing his feelings that he hates the way Jews are put down and discriminated , compared to Christians , this highly upsets him , So can Shylock be perceived as a villain throughout the whole play or only in certain moments of the play ?

In another area of the merchant of Venice , Anti-Semitism is shown again where Shylock is disgustingly mocked by Antonio in (1.3.121-122; 135-141)SHYLOCK :You call me misbeliever, cutthroat dog,And spet upon my Jewish gaberdine,’Fair sir, you spet on me on Wednesday last,You spurned me such a day; another time You called me dog; and for these courtesies I’ll lend you thus much moneys’?
ANTONIO : I am as like to call thee so again,
To spit on thee again, to spurn thee too. In this part of the play Shylock wholeheartedly proclaimed the way Antonio has treated like a piece of rubbish , then Antonio shows no sign of sympathy, cold-hearted and is unapologetic , therefore insists that his racist behaviour towards Shylock will never change , not even if he lends him money. From this passage in the play I can infer that Shylock is clearly discriminated by Antonio due to his actions of hatred towards him , once for again for the main reason of ‘HE IS A JEW’. Antonio then goes to say that his ways towards Shylock will not change, even if he is given money by Shylock. But on the other-hand certain people may say that Antonio did this out of his pure jealousy for Shylock due to his riches, but in my opinion he only did this because he is Jew therefore Antonio will not respect him. I strongly wonder if Antonio’s abuse towards Shylock is to blame for his possible downfall later on in the play…

In my opinion Anti-Semitism is shown in an area where, Shylock shows the justice system is corrupt , because throughout the play , people such as Antonio and his associates, as well as other Christians characters in the play constantly try to accuse Shylock of being evil, barbarous and cold-hearted , due to the fact of wanting Antonio’s Flesh, But Shylock declared and proclaimed in Act 4, Scene 1 “You have among you many a purchased slave, which , like your asses and your dogs and mules, you us in object and in slavish parts because you bought them.” Here Shylock is highlighting the non-fictional point of the Christians in Venice being involved in the slave trade in the 1500s. This is where ” Venice had established a thriving slave trade, buying in Italy, amongst other places, and selling to the Moors in Northern Africa, the Venetians began to sell Slavs and other Eastern European non-Christian slaves in greater numbers.” From this Shylock is showing us the audience , that the Christians talk about having love and mercy but were largely involved in a very evil act of slavery. The Christians and Venetian state are discriminating him by saying he is a bad person, but they make there money from slavery , treat Jews like animals and are corrupt , so if Shylock was in Antonio’s situation a pound of flesh would be taken from him, So in this case Shylock is not wrong for wanting is bond.

In conclusion to my essay , I think the merchant of venice is an anti-semitic play due to the points I have highlighted above , where Shylock countless times is brought down by the Christians and mocked because he is Jew. I also think that the Christians are to blame for Shylock’s villainy throughout the play, I think this turned out to be costly for the Christians as there comes a point where Shylock’s understanding and Sympathy is needed but will be over-shone by his revengeful and villainy thoughts.

THIS HOUSE BELIEVES SINGLE-SEX SCHOOLS ARE GOOD FOR EDUCATION

Most people would agree with me that the years of which children become adolescents are the best time to expose them to the company of the other gender, in order that they may learn each other’s’ behaviour and be better prepared for adult life.Furthermore, even if girls naturally perform better in an environment without boys, they need to learn how to perform just as well with boys. Dr. Alan Smithers, a respected British schools expert, declared in a 2006 report that ‘distraction by boys was a myth’ and that ‘half a century of research has not shown any dramatic or consistent advantages for single-sex education for boys or girls’.

Secondly , Men always say that they do not understand women, perhaps because they were sent to single sex schools. Research has proved that boys who went to single sex schools as opposed to mixed schools are more likely to get divorced and suffer from depression in their 40. This is proof that we should school our children in mixed schools in order to give them the best bill of emotional health. Dr. Diana Leonard, who presented the findings, concluded that ‘Boys learn better when they are with girls and they actually learn to get on better.

In despite of the fact that some people may say that girls would be distracted from learning by boys ,as they would want to look good to impress other boys in there classes , this should be a subject in which teaches both boys and girls to adapt to each other and show a level of immense maturity.

The Missing Street

It was One O’ clock in the morning, as Taylor and I Tyrone; rode down on our Ridgeback Bikes through the dark streets on Brixton. The sky was dark and the air was misty as Taylor and I thought about getting something to eat. I was only 15 and hardly had a mind of how late is was and whether or not my mum was shaking to bits worrying about where I was ; all I cared about was doing my own thing , but whom would of known that one night would ruin my life and change it for the worst …

” Taylor for the 10th time can we go get some KFC I’m so hungry feel like I’m going to drop dead in a minute! ” I shouted angrily as he was being so defiant.

” Yes come on then and hurry up I’m tired and I urgently need my bed,” he said.

“Why are you so weak and tired when all you’eve done is lay in your bed playing PS4 , you know Taylor sometimes I wonder about your life and how you use your time so irresponsibly. You say you wan to make it somewhere in life but its like you don’t even care about your life. Taylor you need to fix up and do it fast because both of us are ruining ourselves , and were growing up quickly , we need to change ! ”

” Shut up Tyrone and up it a gear on your bike so we can get the food and I can go home. ”

” Have you just listened to anything I said or have you been day-dreaming and you just don’t care.” I said as I was tempted to just slap him for his immaturity.

Taylor and I have been Friends for years , ever since we were seven. Strangely , Taylor and I have always had a weird bond as we are best friends, and we both have things in common such as football and having a laugh, but the smoking was ruining our football careers as we both played for Arsenal Academy , but then again we have to make mistakes in life, as we are young and learn from them , but should we really or is it to late ?

It was no 2 O’ clock in the morning , Taylor and I were riding on our bikes towards his flat , when in all of sudden the lights started to flicker on the street. The road was like a wilderness deep through a forest where no human being had set foot, It was quiet , It was scary and my heart started thumping in anxiety as we rode down to ‘ Broadoak Court ‘  Taylor’s Flat. In the distance I could see a glowing figure , dressed in all black , but no face for some strange reason .

” Taylor can you see that figure in the distance,” I said.

” Since when does the lights on Barrington Road ever not work, and what’s that at the bottom of the road , glowing , looking like some sort of robot.” Taylor stated anxiously.

” Lets just get to your house because this is freaking me out , didn’t you just hear me say how that person in the middle of the road has no face, for goodness sake you don’t listen , we should just run away were going to be killed by a robot !”

For a moment I wondered if I was safe despite the fact my body was emerging me to go forward and put myself in danger. Suddenly , a blast of a gleaming white light blurred my eyes with pain and horror. After this terrifying moment it disappeared without a trace , without a sound and without a thought  of where it could be.

Taylor ran into his Flat , shocked and shaken by what had happened . My mind was in shambles and my lips were trembling as I thought to myself. Why us ? Why now ? Why here ?

I decided to leave my bike with Taylor and walk home because I could barely feel my legs. Wearily, I walked sown the dark and foggy road where in a blink of an eye, I heard a strange voice.

” Tyrone , Tyrone , Tyrone, where you going its you best friend Taylor , dont panic.”

At an instant I stopped and glared around but I saw no one and my heart skipped a beat in anxiety. Quickly , I  ran around the corner to find this person but saw no one. All of a sudden BANG, it was there right in front of me. I almost fainted on the spot as I looked at it and knew it was all over. It was the moment I looked at myself . I HAD BEEN CLONED AND IT IS OUT TO KILL ME AND TAKE OVER MY LIFE . THAT WAS THE END. I was scared thought it was going to kill me but it didn’t , It simply looked at me and blasted in the air , never to be seen again . Now my life is in a factory 24/7 and it may be this world for the rest of my life .

The Bermuda Triangle

The Bermuda Triangle is a weird Triangular piece of ocean in between Florida , Bermuda and Puerto Rico ,more than 1000 ships and planes have disappeared in the triangle area over the past five centuries and continue to do so. The Bermuda Triangle was a very tragic moment in American history. It happened on December 5 ,1945 when 5 US Navy Avenger bombers mysteriously vanished while on a routine training mission. The flight was led my Charles Taylor who was a Lieutenant ,who constantly had communication with other pilots until all of them could not be heard by each other on their radios. When the military base saw the the had no contact with between each other, they sent out a rescue plane to find but that also never came back, six aircraft’s and 27 men vanished without a trace. Many people believe that Flight 19 simply vanished into the Atlantic Ocean. There are many stories and myths about the Bermuda Triangle and weather it is a place of evil where people go and never come back.  BY KELVIN HWK 4
